How to . . .Set a Simple Dinner Table

Informal tablesettingSetting a table for a simple family dinner is an easy task for your kids to learn and is a great way to cultivate their heart of service.  Here are the basic rules: Utensils are placed in the order of use, that is, from the outside in. Second, with only a few exceptions: Forks go to the left of the plate, and knives and spoons go to the right. Other basics to know:

  • Knife blades always face the plate
  • The napkin goes to the left of the fork, or on the plate
  • The bread and butter plate/knife are placed to the left (above the forks) and are optional
  • The water/beverage glass is placed directly above the knife
